The Summit 2012 Advance Team recently visited Washington, D.C. in preparation for our upcoming CEO Summit on Capitol Hill (June 12-13). While there, they met with several members of Congress, White House officials, and policy experts – here are a few highlights:

1)    Darrell West, Founding Director, Center for Technology Innovation, Brookings Institute:

West discussed the innovation economy’s potential to serve as a job creator, as well as the role technology can play in driving innovation in health care and education – both key themes for his address to Summit attendees on June 13. (West’s session will be moderated by Mark Walsh, CEO of Genius Rocket – a must-attend!)

2)    Jeff Levi, Executive Director of the Trust for America’s Health:

Levi discussed the importance of workplace wellness programs and community based public health initiatives that are geared toward reducing the incidence of chronic disease. He was enthusiastic about the Alliance’s leadership in launching a campaign to implement and enhance workplace wellness programs, and he understands the obstacles small businesses, in particular, face in getting these programs off the ground.  Levi also appreciated the Alliance’s support for the Prevention and Public Health Fund, and said that business support for investments in public health that bring down health care costs is critical to moving the country forward on this issue.

3)    Maya MacGuineas, Frank Micciche and Ed Lorenzen, Committee for Responsible Federal Budget:

The Alliance and CRFB discussed several potential avenues for future collaboration. One possibility is with the CRFB’s new CEO Council, a group of business leaders interested in working with government to achieve meaningful expenditure and tax reform in order to reduce the deficit. Responsible governance is a core value of the Alliance, and we believe our political leaders must make the necessary decisions to balance our budget through revenue and expenditure reform in order to maintain our global economic competitiveness. Lots of opportunity to work together there!

These are just a small handful of conversations Alliance leaders and staff have had in preparation for the Summit, and they highlight the importance of opportunity to bring the voice of business leaders to the people who make and shape our nation’s public policy.
