We at the Alliance for Business Leadership join with the nation in mourning the lives lost in Newtown, CT, and we share the outrage of many over this horrific act, which has once again brought into sharp focus the issue of gun control in the US.

In his speech last night, President Obama said we must and can stop this growing wave of violence, signaling an important opening for our nation to create a rational framework for gun control. As business leaders seeking to address the major challenges of our time, we are called to action by these events, and in the coming days we will explore how we can help move these important conversations forward, including a possible formal Alliance position on the issue of gun control that staff is preparing for board consideration.

For now, we encourage all our members to support the president’s efforts to stop the violence by signing the petition below, which is on the White House’s “We the People” portal. In the coming days, we will share additional resources on our blog, particularly those that address the role of business in addressing these issues.

We Petition the Obama Administration to:
Immediately address the issue of gun control through the introduction of legislation in Congress

The goal of this petition is to force the Obama Administration to produce legislation that limits access to guns. While a national dialogue is critical, laws are the only means in which we can reduce the number of people murdered in gun related deaths.

Powerful lobbying groups allow the ownership of guns to reach beyond the Constitution’s intended purpose of the right to bear arms. Therefore, Congress must act on what is stated law, and face the reality that access to firearms reaches beyond what the Second Amendment intends to achieve.

The signatures on this petition represent a collective demand for a bipartisan discussion resulting in a set of laws that regulates how a citizen obtains a gun.
