FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ALLIANCE FOR BUSINESS LEADERSHIP NAMES JENNIFER BENSON AS NEXT PRESIDENT
BOSTON — Concluding a two-month search, The Alliance for Business Leadership announced today that it has named State Representative Jennifer Benson as its next president.
Benson has represented the communities of Acton, Ayer, Boxborough, Harvard, Lunenburg, and Shirley in the Massachusetts House of Representatives since 2009, and will bring her years of experience as a statewide leader on issues including health care, clean energy, and economic development to her new role at the Alliance for Business Leadership.
The selection of Benson follows a lengthy search process led by ABL board member Andrea Silbert. Interim president Alex Richman will continue to manage the organization’s day-to-day operations until Benson assumes her new role on January 13th. Benson officially notified the Clerk of the House of her resignation date of January 8th from her legislative seat on Thursday morning.
“Economic growth and social responsibility are two sides of the same coin. Jen’s passion for this value, and her advocacy around the issues that matter to our members, make her the ideal candidate for the role of president at ABL,” said Beth Monaghan, board chair for the Alliance for Business Leadership. “Her ability to inspire action and change will fuel our work as we continue making the Commonwealth of Massachusetts a beacon of what’s possible when businesses advocate for progressive values.”
“It has been an honor to represent the 37th Middlesex District for the last 11 years on Beacon Hill. My role in crafting, vetting, and passing public policy has allowed me to see first hand the power of smart policy on the everyday lives of the people in my district,” said Benson. “I look forward to working with business leaders from around the Commonwealth to advocate for progressive policies that will strengthen our economy, lift up our communities, and make an impact in the lives of families and workers in all corners of our state.”
Working with business leaders and entrepreneurs across the Commonwealth, Benson will spearhead ABL’s strategic focus in 2020 on issues related to clean energy, transportation, housing, and workplace opportunities, and help ensure that they are centered in statewide advocacy efforts.
During her time in the state legislature, Benson was a champion of smart economic growth and expanded opportunity in the Commonwealth, including fighting for transparency in the way the state utilizes corporate tax breaks, and support for small businesses. Most recently, Benson served as the House Chair of the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing, where she oversaw the legislature’s efforts to control rising health care costs.
Benson served as a member of a number of influential caucuses, including the Clean Energy Caucus, the Caucus of Women Legislators, and the Special Education Caucus among others. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Women in Government Foundation, and as a member of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators.
A native of Rochester, New Hampshire, Benson holds a Bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic University, and a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Benson currently lives in Lunenburg with her husband, Brent, and her three children Hannah, Maya, and Noah.
