About the Give Back Awards

Rubber chicken dinner in a dark hotel ballroom? Not at the Give Back Awards! Now in its 4th year, the Give Back Awards is an evening of service in honor of progressive business leaders who are committed to social responsibility and sustainable economic growth. We’ll gather at the City Year’s headquarters and for a brief reception and program, followed by working together to assemble care packages for students in need. A Partnership with city year

City Year is an international non-profit that was founded in Boston in 1988 with the mission of building democracy through citizen service, civic leadership, and social entrepreneurship. City Year does this by uniting highly motivated young AmeriCorps members to serve as tutors, mentors and role models for a year in some of our nation’s highest-need schools in order to support students in reaching high school graduation on track for college and career success. During the 2018-2019 school year in Boston, AmeriCorps members served full-time in 29 Boston Public Schools, reaching 15,000 students every day.

The Give Back Awards is held at the City Year headquarters, and supports their important work with an evening of service, and a donation of $50 per event attendee.

Recognizing Socially Responsible Business Leaders 

Each year, the Alliance for Business Leadership honors socially responsible leaders and businesses.

*ABL will make a $50 donation to City Year for each attendee.

The Eli J. Segal Award

About Paul M. English:

Paul is the CTO of Lola.com, the easiest way for businesses to manage their employee travel. Previously, Paul was CTO of KAYAK, a travel company he co-founded in 2004, took public in 2012, and sold to Priceline in 2013. Paul is also the founder of GetHuman, a service created to give consumers excellent customer service at any company, and Boston Light, a small business ecommerce startup he sold to Intuit.

Paul is the subject of Tracy Kidder’s book “A Truck Full of Money”, published by Random House in September 2016.

Nonprofit Work

Paul is cofounder of Summits Education, an organization that is building education systems in rural Haiti. Summits operates a network of 40 schools in Haiti’s Central Plateau, employing over 350 educators, and serving 10,000 students. Paul first went to Haiti in 2003. (Paul wè bote ak espwa.)

Paul is a Director of Partners In Health and of Village Health Works, both organizations providing quality healthcare to populations of extreme poverty. Paul is also very interested in problems of homelessness in Boston. Paul’s newest project is to bring an MLK Memorial to Boston.

Name You Should Know honorees

The Name You Should Know Award is given annually by The Alliance for Business Leadership to business leaders under the age of 45 who are deserving of public recognition for his or her commitment to social responsibility and civic engagement, and for using his or her role as a leader in the business community to advance causes or issues that create growth and opportunity for all people. The Name You Should Know Award particularly seeks to raise the profile of up-and- coming business leaders making meaningful contributions to civic life. These professionals are seen as assets to their organizations in thinking strategically, and engages communities in their work.

The Company You Should Know Award is given annually by The Alliance for Business Leadership to businesses that are deserving of public recognition for their commitment to social responsibility and civic engagement, and for using their role as an employer in the Commonwealth to advance causes or issues that create growth and opportunity for all people. The Company You Should Know Award particularly seeks to raise the profile of up-and-coming businesses making meaningful contributions to civic life. The company is viewed as an asset to the business community in the Commonwealth in thinking strategically to engage diverse groups of individuals in their work.
